Our story
Zen was born from the meeting of Zen Okawa, passionate about authentic Japanese cuisine, and Mitsuru Yamada, a chef driven by a quest for harmony. From this shared vision emerged a clear idea: to create together a place reflecting their values, where each dish is an invitation to travel, guided by simplicity and kindness.
It was in 2006, in the heart of the Palais-Royal district, a stone's throw from the Louvre, that this vision came to life. In this iconic setting in the 1st arrondissement of Paris, Zen settled in and cultivated the spirit of taishu shokudo, those popular Japanese restaurants where you eat well, simply, and where you always return.
Over the years, the establishment has forged a unique, two-sided identity. At lunchtime, Zen transforms into a lively and welcoming Japanese canteen. In the evening, the atmosphere changes, and the restaurant becomes a gourmet izakaya, reminiscent of those convivial Tokyo establishments.
Twenty years after its inception, the standards remain the same: carefully selected seasonal produce, time-honored techniques, and hospitality true to omotenashi, the Japanese art of welcoming guests with attentiveness and discretion. This consistency has been recognized for several years by the Michelin Guide, which has honored us by selecting us.
